I was lucky enough to spend the summer of 2013 living with my friend Dave at his family’s beach house in Fenwick Island, Delaware. Dave was a breakfast cook, I cooked pizzas, and we both saved up our tips for a one-day ticket to Firefly Music Festival.
We chose to go Friday, the first day of the event. We navigated through the traffic, found parking, and made the long walk to the venue. Our first set of the day was Twenty One Pilots. For a Friday afternoon set, the energy was out of this world and it immediately set the tone.

While the day was just getting started, we had no time to waste. On the way to the next show, we swung by the bar. My fake ID survived the check, and I grabbed our group a few drinks as we made our way to the Lawn stage. We arrived just in time to watch Ellie Goulding perform an incredible live set.
Instead of leaving and heading to another stage, our group made the smart choice of staying put and pushing forward for Calvin Harris. He wouldn’t be on for another hour, but we decided to wait it out and see how close we could get. This turned out to be an amazing idea. We were dead center and in perfect position for Calvin Harris. While Ellie was amazing, Calvin Harris took the energy of the crowd to an entirely new level. We danced the night away, surrounded by close friends, good vibes, and pounding dance music.
Calvin Harris closed out the Lawn stage, but somehow the night was still young. There was more music on the menu. We made our way to the back of the main stage crowd, found a little bit of space, and settled in for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. We were all pretty exhausted from a day full of dance music, but in this environment, it was extremely easy to take it easy, sit back in the grass, and watch the Red Hot Chili Peppers do their thing.
At the conclusion of the set, we made the long walk back to the car and completed the hour-plus drive home safely. We were all buzzing with excitement, already planning our return trip for next year. The only difference – we wanted to camp on-site and go for all three days!
